The UK House of Commons Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport Committee is to question representatives from Amazon and Google about the future of their smart devices and data protection. The Committee is expected to ask about the level of data collected by devices and cybersecurity, which the Government has said “continues to be an afterthought for many manufacturers of connectable products”.
MPs may also ask about competition from Chinese manufacturers and fears of a “race to the bottom” in product standards and consumer security.
The 5th session of the inquiry into Connected technology will also hear from John Edwards, the UK’s information commissioner. Members may examine his opinions on the UK’s data protection regulation, the challenges of engaging with multinational tech giants, and Government proposals to regulate artificial intelligence.
